How to create a good hyperlink

April 22nd, 2011

I recently spoke with a lady who needed help setting up her first website. She was a great writer and can write many articles in a short amount of time and each one was very high quality. I set her up a site on Blogger.com and I thought she would be ready to go. What ended up happening is this lady got completely hung up on Blogger.com’s tagging system. You can tag each article you write with several descriptions the article is about. No matter how many ways I described the tagging system she could not understand the concept and did not want to go further with her website until this was understood. Although the tag system was not critical to her success she became permanently stagnated in failure before she ever really began. What we teach is moving past this silly type of behavior. You need to write 4 articles in total to begin. The first article will be of high quality while the other articles will be similar in topic but not necessarily as high of a quality article as your original.

Here is how writing articles to your site works. You need to write one high quality very good compelling article on your site of a topic of your choice. The article on your website needs to be extremely good, edited, and spelled correctly. You do not want to re-post this article on another site. This article needs to be exclusive to this site so be sure you get this point as it is extremely important. You will then write some more articles that may be similar but do not have to have the kind of thought and time that went into the first article.

Although it is a smart thing to have your main website on a paid web host like Bluehost you can also use free hosts like Wordpress.com, Blogger.com, and Tumblr.com. Once you have one or two sites setup begin writing your articles on these sites. Even if you have no sites setup yet you could still be writing articles and when those sites are up you can simply paste those articles into the sites once you get them up. The important point is to not get held up in the process of moving forward in some way. The main failing point when making a money making site is that people eventually fail before they have even really started. So get started in writing a main article and 3 more similar articles that do not have to be as good.

Now that you have an article written on these other websites you can concentrate on thinking about how to create a hyperlink in that article that links back to the original article you have written on your main site. Keep in mind that these articles written on other sites are not the exact same as your original article. The articles may be about the same topic but you did not copy and paste the content from one site to another. You never want to duplicate content. Search engines hate duplicate content. To create the links in the article that link back to your article on your main site you simply need to find the paperclip icon in the site graphical user interface. There you can enter the site URL, Title, and Alt Text. The ALT text and keywords are critical to doing an effective SEO linking strategy. You want to make sure you link to the main article using the same words you expect someone to search in Google to find your article. Keep it under 4 words and you will receive more traffic.

Finally do not forget to link back to the main site using the right keywords. On self hosted sites, Blogger.com, and Wordpress.com you will see a little paper clip icon. This icon automatically creates hyperlinks for you. In the url field simply enter the website address back to the main article on your main site. In the ALT text area enter a 2 - 3 word keyword that people would use to search in a search engine like Yahoo to find your subject matter. Finally in the Title field enter 2 - 3 words slightly different than the ALT text that people would use to search fro your article in similar search engines like Google.

Search engines drive more targeted traffic than any other source and the only way to tap into that source is through the power of keywords. If you want a piece of that Organic Traffic Jam then you need to learn how to effectively research and optimize the words that people are searching for.

Once you have established the niche for your next site build you need to research the applicable keywords and find the low competition longtail keyword that will be your profit puller. To do this you need to first find a list of candidates through the Google Keyword Tool and then find the competition for each of these phrases. This requires a search in Google with the phrase in inverted commas (” “), which tells Google to search for that exact phrase. The resulting pages are those with that keyphrase in their title and thus are your competition. As you can imagine this process takes a considerable amount of time, but with Keyword Research Pro - all this occurs in minutes not hours.

If you are a blogger and you have just written a post, having a tool that can provide you with this information means you can optimise each and every post with the best possible keyphrase. Do you have any idea what this will do to your stats over time? We are talking 1000’s more visitors to your blog, and more importantly they will all be TARGETED visitors!

7 Big Benefits To Creating Your Next Small Business Website With WordPress

April 11th, 2010

Which of these choices would you prefer?

One that involves custom programming costing $3000 or more, requires a knowledge of complex programming languages in order to make even simple changes to the content, and requires a complete redesign (again costing thousands of dollars) if you decide the look is outdated?

Or one that is created using software that costs you nothing, has content in a structure that lets you easily update it yourself and has hundreds of professional templates available so if you think the look is outdated you can replace it with a new one in less than 5 minutes?

I thought so!

If you haven’t met already, allow me to introduce you to WordPress.

Originally a software package used primarily for blogging, WordPress has become an amazingly robust Content Management System small business owners can use to easily create professional looking websites for their businesses.

Here are 7 reasons why using WordPress for your small business’ website is such an appealing option:

1. It costs nothing! Not one penny! WordPress is available for download at WordPress.org at no cost - you won’t even have to give up your email address. To host a WordPress site yourself, however, you will need to find a hosting company. That’s generally not free. But it’s not expensive either. For just $5 - $10 a month you can host your WordPress site at any number of quality web host providers. Many of them include Fantastico with your hosting plan which is software that lets you install WordPress in just a few clicks without even having to download the software.

2. Ease of Use. Using WordPress is really quite simple. Yes, especially for the technically-challenged among us, there will be a little bit of a learning curve. However, there’s no shortage of quality WordPress tutorials online to help you get up to speed quickly. Once you get the hang of things, adding content is a snap. It’s no more difficult than using a word processing program. And you don’t have to know how to write code or do anything vaguely technical in nature to maintain your site.

3. Themes. Think of a theme as a template. It will change the look and feel of your WordPress site. It can also change the behind-the-scenes workings of your site to provide additional functionality. You can choose from thousands of different themes - some are free, some you have to pay for. And if you can’t find one that quite suits your requirements, you can hire a designer to create a custom theme for your WordPress site.

Using themes you can pretty much get whatever look and feel you want for your WordPress site. And if you get tired of one theme, simply install another and you can instantly and completely change the look of your site - without having to touch the core content already on the site.

4. Plugins. A plugin is a piece of software you can add to your WordPress site that enhances the functionality of WordPress. There are plugins that help with your site’s search engine optimization, improve site security, fight spam, design a contact form, add e-commerce functionality, etc. And the best part is most of these plugins are free!

5. Search Engine Optimization. The search engines LOVE WordPress sites. Add a few SEO-friendly plugins and then you’ll really be in good shape.

6. Support. WordPress is an extremely popular and commonly used piece of software. There are thousands of people available to help you if you have problems. Whether it’s asking for help in a forum or hiring a WordPress pro, a solution to whatever issue you may have is not far away.

7. Control. When you host your own WordPress website, you are in the driver’s seat. You can easily update content, add new pages or posts, give the site a facelift and much more without being at the mercy of a web programmer. And if you did want to hire someone to assist you in updating your website, there are plenty of qualified people around who can help.

There you have seven reasons to strongly consider WordPress to power your small business’ website. To be certain, there are definitely situations where having a custom programmed website created by a reputable, qualified professional is the way to go.

But for the majority of small business owners that I come across, a basic, professional looking site, maybe with a blog, maybe not will do the trick. If that’s you, I’d check out WordPress. With it’s combination of flexiblity, functionality and cost, it’s tough to match. combination of price, flexibility and functionality.
